Dementia prevention relies on this

When we look at preventing dementia, we can also look directly at the most important time frame to do so, that being midlife. For people who are hitting their late 30s, 40s, or 50s, this is the most important time to look at long-term health, otherwise known as longevity.

We can then look further at specifically what is shown to prevent dementia. These are not the whole list. There are many different things that go into a dementia diagnosis and dementia prevention but these are just the three biggest that you can control right now (and that are listed on the Lancet Commission as large contributing factors to dementia and Alzheimer’s):

1. Your metabolic health.

Wanting to lose excess fat can be a good starting point.

But how you do it matters.

Eating less and less while your strength, sleep, and energy fall apart isn’t the outcome we’re after.

We want consistent meals. Enough protein. More fiber. Strength training you can actually stick with.

Losing weight while building yourself up.

2. Your cholesterol.

You’ve probably seen someone online telling you LDL cholesterol doesn’t matter, that you were lied to about it and you should eat all the butter and steak you want.

No no no.

Your body needs cholesterol. That doesn’t mean high LDL is harmless especially when paired with a body that isn't metabolically health and has blood sugar problems. This can create a storm of inflammation.

Lets combat the bad cholesterol.

Add foods like salmon, walnuts, olive oil, avocado, beans, and seeds. Replace some saturated fat with unsaturated fats high in polyphenols and increase fiber to over 20g a day.

3. Your blood pressure.

Don’t wait until you feel bad to pay attention. High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms.

Get it checked. Take regular walks. Give sleep some actual space in your schedule. Pay attention to sodium and alcohol.

And if you’re stressed all day, every day, make room to address that too.

Heck, spending less time watching the news and more time walking your dog is a pretty good place to start.

This is why managing your health in midlife needs to look different.

Your hormones may be changing. Responsibilities keep piling up. The routine you used at 25 might not fit the life you have now.

Another round of cutting food and grinding through workouts doesn’t address all of that.

You need a plan that supports your strength, recovery, and metabolic health and fits a Tuesday when everything goes sideways.

These steps can help reduce dementia risk. They also build the health you need to enjoy your life right now.
